“While Bangkok is a big metropolitan city, however, if you venture just a little bit further, you will be pleasantly surprised with quiet neighborhoods and pleasant historical gold mines like the UNESCO heritage sites in Ayutthaya or the beautiful wildlife by Khao Yai National Park.”

1: Visit the Grand Palace in Bangkok and marvel at the intricately designed temples and palaces – this is a must for everyone who visits Bangkok - https://goo.gl/maps/kre2eEaHhEL2

2: Cruise down the River Chao Phraya – you might get a little wet.

3: People watch in the busy streets of Khao San Road – you will certainly meet other people watching you! - https://goo.gl/maps/bHRfPEZQLUE2

4: Dare yourself to eat a few bugs and crickets – surprisingly healthy, then how about the scorpions on a stick!!!?

5: Watch a Traditional Muay Thai fight – not for the squeamish

6: Shop till you drop in Chatuchak Market - https://youtu.be/ndeLupPn7Og -  and many of Bangkok’s Traditional markets – remember to bring an empty bag with you or a rucksack and check the items fit in your suitcase when you go home – please remember Buddha figurines are not for decoration and will be confiscated by the Airport Officials.

7: Eat your weight in Pad Thai, Tom Yum and all the other delicious Thai street food – this is everywhere!

8: Visit the Historic City of Ayutthaya – a place which is submerged in culture and history - https://goo.gl/maps/otPDkKwQjZP2

9: Visit the floating market in Bangkok and watch the chaos of vendors float by – try some of the food prepared by the chefs and marvel as they are able to balance their cooking

10: Go skydiving in Pattaya

11: Go Trekking in Khao Yai National Park to see the incredible wildlife.

This is just a drop in the ocean – the list continues next week here or the complete list is here - https://www.adventureinyou.com/thailand/bucket-list-guide/ and we would also like you to stay with us at one of our Cape and Kantary Hotels. 'Roaming Amongst the Ruins' - Ayutthaya

Each week we post a link to an article in Bangkok 101 -  and today we choose to share with you - an article within a bigger one about Ayutthaya - 'Roaming Amongst the Ruins'. Original text by Bruce Scott.

Ayutthaya was the second capital of Thailand (when it was called Siam). But in 1767 the Burmese invaded and Ayutthaya was almost decimated and the royal line relocated to Bangkok. The Thai Fine Art Department began to restore Ayutthaya in 1969 and then UNESCO declared Ayutthaya a World Heritage Site.

For tourists to see them all in one day transport will be needed and for the famous sites there is a small entrance fee – most sites are open from 8am to 5pm. Here is a selection from the list that they make for you;

This was the most respected and holiest temple in Ayutthaya. Location: https://goo.gl/maps/yW4seYcy1nG2

This was one of the most important Wats here but most of the large Chedi have collapsed. Location: https://goo.gl/maps/BAjL2St4t772

The SacredBuddha Head (within Wat Phra Mahathat).
This is probably one of the most photographed ancient relics in Ayutthaya, getting there early helps you get a good photo.

This was a Wat which was built by King Borom Ratchathirat II at the place where his brothers battled for the ascension to the throne and they killed each other. Here’s a video.  .

Wat Chaiwatthanaram
This is an impressive temple in the Khmer-style and used as a Royal Temple by King Prasat Thong and other members.  A place of great historical significance and certainly worth a visit, this is the location:https://goo.gl/maps/YjrmVP7BagB2, just across the river form the main square.

If you want to read the rest of the article this is the link - https://www.bangkok101.com/roaming-amongst-the-ruins/ - and if you do visit Ayutthaya, why not consider staying at Kantary Hotel?

BKK 101 - Ayutthaya

Thailand certainly is an amazing place and has an enormous number of beautiful places to visit.

Each week we post a link to an article in Bangkok 101 - https://www.bangkok101.com/  - this week we chose to share an article written by Dr Tom Vitayakul and his unique take on Thailand and Ayutthaya - https://www.bangkok101.com/on-ayutthaya-oct-2017/

“With five revolving dynasties and 33 kings, backstabbing, coup d’ètats, treason, poisoning and plain old murder were just part of the game. Some of these monarchs were on the throne for only two months or less.”

The history of the Ancient City started centuries ago with the mixing of the Chinese, Japanese, Indians, Persians and more began to mingle with the local people. Kings built their palaces here to “escape the prying eyes of the main court” – which meant that Ayutthaya was always filled with something special.

Ayutthaya lost its sovereignty twice to Burma (1569 and 1767) – and could regain it, which left much of the temples in Ayutthaya in ruins and now it is a UNESCO site.

Dr Tom Vitayakul has some recommendations for us;

- Favourite temple: Wat Nha Phra Mane - https://goo.gl/maps/sQxdNXAG3TB2 - where there is a traditional green Buddha statue.

- Place for History Buffs: Ayutthaya Historical study centre - https://goo.gl/maps/TuQfzY13jT52 - where there are interesting exhibitions to be found.

- Real treasures: Chao Sam Phyra National Museum: - https://goo.gl/maps/NQpjZWuCjvp - where there are priceless pieces to see - https://www.renown-travel.com/daytripsayutthaya/chaosamphrayamuseum.html

- Romantic Ruins: Wat Chai Wattanaram - https://goo.gl/maps/qf4Ves7ytox - on the banks of the Chao Phraya River and best viewed as the sun is setting - https://www.wmf.org/project/wat-chaiwatthanaram

- Popular: Bang Pa-In Summer Palace.

If you are unable to get all that way to Ayutthaya there is a scaled down version at the Ancient City in Samut Prakan - http://ancientcitygroup.net/ancientsiam/en/ but if you can please stay with us at Kantary Hotel Ayutthaya - OR Classic Kameo Ayutthaya.
