'Roaming Amongst the Ruins' - Ayutthaya

Each week we post a link to an article in Bangkok 101 -  and today we choose to share with you - an article within a bigger one about Ayutthaya - 'Roaming Amongst the Ruins'. Original text by Bruce Scott.

Ayutthaya was the second capital of Thailand (when it was called Siam). But in 1767 the Burmese invaded and Ayutthaya was almost decimated and the royal line relocated to Bangkok. The Thai Fine Art Department began to restore Ayutthaya in 1969 and then UNESCO declared Ayutthaya a World Heritage Site.

For tourists to see them all in one day transport will be needed and for the famous sites there is a small entrance fee – most sites are open from 8am to 5pm. Here is a selection from the list that they make for you;

This was the most respected and holiest temple in Ayutthaya. Location: https://goo.gl/maps/yW4seYcy1nG2

This was one of the most important Wats here but most of the large Chedi have collapsed. Location: https://goo.gl/maps/BAjL2St4t772

The SacredBuddha Head (within Wat Phra Mahathat).
This is probably one of the most photographed ancient relics in Ayutthaya, getting there early helps you get a good photo.

This was a Wat which was built by King Borom Ratchathirat II at the place where his brothers battled for the ascension to the throne and they killed each other. Here’s a video.  .

Wat Chaiwatthanaram
This is an impressive temple in the Khmer-style and used as a Royal Temple by King Prasat Thong and other members.  A place of great historical significance and certainly worth a visit, this is the location:https://goo.gl/maps/YjrmVP7BagB2, just across the river form the main square.
