Ayutthaya was the second capital of Thailand (when it was
called Siam). But in 1767 the Burmese invaded and Ayutthaya was almost
decimated and the royal line relocated to
Bangkok. The Thai Fine Art Department began to restore Ayutthaya in 1969 and
then UNESCO declared Ayutthaya a World Heritage Site.
For tourists to
see them all in one day transport will be needed and for the famous sites there
is a small entrance fee – most sites are open from 8am to 5pm. Here is a selection from the list that they make for you;
This was the

This was one of

The SacredBuddha Head (within Wat Phra Mahathat).
This is probably
one of the most photographed ancient relics in Ayutthaya, getting there early
helps you get a good photo.

This was a Wat
which was built by King Borom Ratchathirat II at the place where his brothers battled
for the ascension to the throne and they killed each other. Here’s a video. .

Wat
Chaiwatthanaram
This is an
impressive temple in the Khmer-style and used as a Royal Temple by King Prasat
Thong and other members. A place of great historical significance

the main square.
